Weigh Fish With A Digital Fishing Scale

Fishing is a very relaxing sport. For avid fishers, it is not the size of the catch that matters, but the thrill
of the hunt, err, of the wait. Of course the size of the catch also matters, if not for bragging rights and the
chance to get into the record books, for pictures and memories sake. One of the equipment a fisher (as opposed to
the fisherman, a profession) cannot go without is the digital fishing scale.
These scales are not just for fish, they can be quite useful for frequent airline travelers who need to be able
to maximize their weight limit for baggage. Online resellers on ebay, amazon, craigslist and others will find these
devices very handy as they can weigh their products and give very accurate shipping information to their buyers.
There are many digital fishing scales out there and it’s not hard to find good reviews about each one. Here I’m
going to talk about the two of the ones I really like. My criteria include capacity, functionality, ease of use,
and battery life.
OCS-2 Digital Fishing Scale
The first one is from Intell Instruments. It can display either in metric or imperial units or Kilos and Pounds
if you will; which you can easily toggle with a switch on the side. One of the very important functions that a
digital fishing scale should have is the tare function. This allows you to hang containers or whatever to your
scale first then zero out the weight so that when you add the fish or whatever it is you are weighing later on, it
would only display that item’s weight excluding the container. This function can be used repeatedly, zeroing it
every time you add an item. Its range is 25kg or 55lbs and accuracy is 20g which is displayed up to two
digits after the decimal point on a large LCD screen. The hanging slot is large so that you can hang it almost
anywhere. The hook is also quite big which is able to accommodate almost anything you hang on it. It uses a generic
9v battery which lasts quite long because of an auto power off function. It can be yours for $30-40.
Another personal pick of mine is the American Weigh SR-20 Digital Hanging Scale. It is heavy duty and comes in
yellow so it is not easy to lose. This one looks quite nice and even if you drop it in murky water, it is easy to
find because of the bright coloring. You get a slightly lesser maximum weight compared to the Intell one but this
is not a deal breaker. It has a resolution of 0.2lbs and a backlit display with two decimal places of resolution.
The hanging handle is retractable and the hook can also be stored behind the device. It uses two AAA batteries and
also lasts quite a long time. Like the Intell one you can easily switch it between measuring units. The hold
function lets you view the readout with ease by holding the display so that the reading will not change even if you
move or remove the load. This is a little more expensive at $43.
