What About A Fishing Hat?

My Grandpa use to wear a fedora fishing hat all the time. It even used to have a feather and a few fish flies on
it. He really emphasized the importance of his hat and I thought I would share that with you.
The first benefit of a fishing hat is to keep the sun off the top of your head. The effects of sun stroke and
heat stroke can set in quickly with out you noticing. Falling faint in the river is a dangerous game you don’t want
to tangle in. If you get too hot even with a hat, you can dip it in the water to help cool yourself down. One with
a large brim would work best but even a simple baseball cap can do the trick.
Some hats have snaps or zippers to attach bug nets. Mosquitoes and black flies come in hordes and having them
off your face will make fishing much more manageable. A lot of times, bug repellants won’t keep them from attacking
your face. If you live in a country that has a problem with malaria or West Nile virus, this serves as almost
mandatory.
My grandfather always had flies and hooks on his hat. This is a great way to store some extra tackle with out
worrying about loosing it. This works particularly well with fly fishing since the flies are tiny and light weight.
You can attach some flies on your hat, grab a pole and go out the door. But don’t get too confident, because you
still need to be careful about being stick in the hands or head with the sharp hooks.
And finally, did you know that you loose a tremendous amount of body heat through your head? When the weather is
cooler, or your fishing at night, a hat can certainly help keep you warm. Not all of us have a full head of hair
and a fishing hat becomes more of a permanent part of us.
A fishing hat doesn’t have to cost a fortune; you can even pick them up at the dollar store. What is important
is to remember wearing it on cloudy or sunny days.
Happy Fishing!
