Homemade Fishing Sinkers

It is easy and fairly cheap to buy lead sinkers at the tackle shop. But using lead is not permitted in some
areas and it is a toxin none the less. So why not make your own home made and biodegradable sinkers? Not only is it
cheap, it can be a good way to keep the kids busy.
The benefits of a homemade fishing sinker are that if you lose it in the water, it won’t pollute the lake or
ocean, and it won’t assist in toxic buildup on your hands or the waters. So let’s look how to make a simple
sinker.
What you will need:
- Thin cotton bed sheet or neutral biodegradable material
- Cotton string you can sew with
- Sand from the fishing area you will be in
- Funnel
Just a note here: Don’t use sand from one lake front and use the sinkers at another lake front. This is a good
way to spread invasive species that aren’t natural to that location.
1. Cut a strip of fabric and fold it in half. It is better to have a long sinker than a square
one. This will help keep it aerodynamic when casting.
2. Sew the open sites and leave a small space to allow the funnel to enter the top
3. Fill with sand and really pack it in there. You need a heavy and solid fishing sinker to be
effective.
4. Sew the final seam and you’re finished. You can sew an additional strap to help assist
tying to your line but I find it just as easy to tie a tight knot around it.
I find I am able to cast great distances with these sinkers because of their weight and shape. A good 500g
fishing sinker at the store can run you $10 where as these would run you a few cents. The fish won’t care about
your sinker and besides, it will most likely be covered in mud or weeds at the bottom anyway.
