See In The Water With Polarized Fishing Glasses

Most professional sportsmen will tell you that polarized fishing glasses are the first thing they remember to
take with them on a trip. But they rarely give details on why they wear them and what benefit they have over
regular sunglasses. So let me clear a few things up about fishing glasses.
The advantage of wearing polarized fishing glasses is to allow you to see past the waters glare. In most cases
you will in fact be able to see things you aren’t otherwise able to, including fish, rocks, and other hazards.
However, for some styles of fishing, seeing in to the water has no advantage. This would include ice fishing and
trolling.
Another advantage is for river fishing or fly fishing. If you are in the river itself, it can help you avoid
stepping on rocks or logs causing you to fall in. It also can allow you to see those hidden trout and other fish as
they brush closer to the surface. Normal sunglasses will remove some glare from the sun and water but not as
effective as polarized glasses.
One thing to keep in mind is that a cheap pair of polarized fishing glasses will not give you the best results.
This really is the case of, “you get what you pay for.” The cheaper glasses don’t work as good as the higher end
ones and can other effects like headaches and blurred vision.
My last pair of polarized fishing glasses cost $119. It sounds like a lot of money, and it is if you sit on them
and break them. But considering how much I paid for all of my other fishing equipment it was a small investment.
Most of the glasses you will buy are made from durable materials so accidents don’t happen. The manufacturers are
well aware of the stresses they would go through and have designed them accordingly. You best bet is to stick with
brand names.
Almost 8 years later and I still have the same polarized fishing glasses. So in effect, it cost less than $20
per year for those glasses. Not bad, eh? The bottom line is you can’t go wrong with a pair for $20 that will
protect your eyes, and allow you to see those trophy fish.
